Fellow Minnesotans, September is here, and Fall is right around the corner and the temperatures are starting to drop, especially at nighttime. Now is a great time to start your "winterizing" for your home. Before the nighttime temperatures start dropping below freezing, here are a few items to check off to make sure you and your home are ready for winter. 1) Have your furnace inspected to make sure it is performing optimally, and check/replace your furnace filter (if needed). 2) Have your gutters cleaned to make sure water is able to flow freely through them. 3) Turn off and drain your exterior faucets to avoid freezing/cracking and possible interior water damage. 4) Get some door draft stoppers and put plastic on older drafty windows. 5) Have your attic insulation levels checked and make sure your attic is properly vented to avoid ice dams and insure you are not losing excess heat from the home. 6) If you have an irrigation system, have the excess water blown out of the system by a professional. 7) Inspect and replace batteries in your fire and carbon monoxide detectors.
